RTL and Prime Video launch ‘Gladiators’ competition show

RTL and Amazon Prime Video have launched a revival of the physical competition format, titled ‘Gladiators – Die Show der Giganten’. The show, which draws inspiration from the 1990s ‘American Gladiators’, features contestants competing against a team of professional athletes known as ‘Gladiators’ under names such as ‘Laser’, ‘Giant’, and ‘Dynamite’.

Filmed at the Messe Düsseldorf, the five-part series began streaming on Prime Video on August 6 and transitioned to linear television on RTL starting September 4. The broadcast team includes field reporters Laura Wontorra and Jan Köppen, with Frank Buschmann serving as commentator.

Media observers suggest the resurgence of physically demanding reality formats may be a reaction to the increasing prevalence of AI-generated content, offering viewers a sense of raw, human physicality. While some critics have questioned the scripted nature of the production, the show continues a trend of high-energy, athletic entertainment on German television.
