RTP1 launches documentary series on Portuguese bread traditions

RTP1 is launching a new documentary series titled ‘Pão da Nossa Terra’, which explores the diversity of Portuguese bread and the people preserving its production traditions. The series is scheduled to premiere on Monday, September 28, airing weekly at 21:00.

The inaugural episode focuses on the Beira Interior region and the Serra da Estrela mountains, highlighting rye bread and cornmeal bread (broa de milho). The documentary traces the connections between pastoralism, cereals, and traditional production methods.

Featured subjects include José Carlos Santos from Padaria Dias in Covilhã, as well as Aires and Julieta, who manage the community oven in Cortes do Meio. The episode also visits the Moinhos de Sandomil and the Bread Museum in Seia, concluding with a gathering in the Serra da Estrela to discuss the future of this generational craft.
