RTV Slovenija faces scrutiny over efficiency and impartiality
RTV Slovenija is facing scrutiny regarding its operational efficiency and journalistic impartiality. Critics argue the public broadcaster suffers from political interference and bureaucratic inefficiency, noting that certain educational and cultural programs reach less than 5 percent of the 640,000 citizens who pay the mandatory contribution. Comparisons to neighboring Austria and Croatia suggest the institution may carry approximately 500 redundant employees.
Simultaneously, the RTV Ombudsman, Marica Uršič Zupan, has identified issues with the weekly program ‘Marcel’. The Ombudsman found that the show fails to distinguish between factual reporting and commentary, and lacks authorial diversity, often relying on a single author for commentary segments. This follows viewer complaints regarding biased presentation of historical and political events. While editorial staff cited staffing shortages as a reason for these shortcomings, the Ombudsman noted that the distinction between news and opinion is not sufficiently clear to the public.
