RTVC files legal action over unauthorized use of brand
RTVC - Sistema de Medios Públicos has filed legal actions against two former contractors and other responsible parties regarding the unauthorized use of its brand identity. The entity has submitted a lawsuit for industrial property rights infringement to the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce and a criminal complaint to the Attorney General's Office for the alleged usurpation of industrial property rights.
The legal dispute concerns a digital ecosystem named ‘RTC Noticias’. RTVC reports that the name ‘RTC Noticias’ reproduces eleven of the twelve characters of its registered trademark ‘RTVC Noticias’, omitting only the letter ‘V’. Additionally, the project uses a circular symbol similar to RTVC’s pre-Columbian seal, along with graphic and audiovisual elements that mimic the official news channel.
RTVC stated that these similarities could mislead the public into believing ‘RTC Noticias’ is an official channel, a subsidiary, or an authorized continuation of the state public media system. The entity is seeking the cessation of the use of the name, the blocking of the associated website, the suspension of social media accounts, and the removal of content suggesting a relationship with RTVC.
