European broadcasters plan Eurovision 2027 boycott over Gaza crisis

Several European broadcasters are moving to boycott the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, scheduled to be held in Bulgaria, citing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the continued participation of Israel.

In Spain, RTVE President José Pablo López has announced his intention to propose that the broadcaster's board maintain its suspension from the competition. López stated that while negotiations with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) led to technical improvements in governance and neutrality, there remains a “clear ethical shortcoming” regarding Israel's involvement.

Ireland's national broadcaster, RTÉ, has already confirmed it will not participate in or broadcast the 2027 contest, noting that participation cannot be justified given the loss of life in Gaza. Similarly, the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has announced its intention to boycott, arguing the contest has lost its neutral character.

While the EBU has implemented new safeguards to prevent political influence and ensure secure hosting, several major broadcasters continue to express dissatisfaction with the organization's stance on the conflict.
