Ruana Bezerra attacked during campaign walk in Pernambuco
Ruana Bezerra, a lawyer and candidate for state deputy in Pernambuco representing the PSOL party, was struck in the head by a stone during a campaign walk in Ouricuri on Tuesday. The incident occurred in the Santa Maria neighborhood while she was accompanied by supporters.
Bezerra was treated at the Ouricuri Regional Hospital and was discharged the same night. She has filed a formal complaint with local police to identify the perpetrator and investigate the circumstances. The candidate characterized the attack as an attempt at political and gender-based intimidation, noting that campaign flags had been stolen in previous days.
Leaders within the PSOL, including gubernatorial candidate Ivan Moraes and national president Paula Coradi, have called for a swift investigation and accountability. Coradi highlighted the incident as an example of political violence against women. According to the Superior Electoral Court, 117 cases of such violence have been recorded in 2026.
