Ruben Phillips' Foo Fighters-inspired recovery and hope to meet Dave Grohl
Ruben Phillips, a 14‑year‑old from Medowie, New South Wales, was born with cerebral palsy. At age nine he travelled to the United States for major spinal surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital, a procedure funded by more than $100,000 raised by his community.
During the operation and the lengthy rehabilitation, the teen relied on the music of the Foo Fighters, describing the band’s songs as his lifeline. He said the track “My Hero” played constantly in the hospital and that “Music is my life.”
Inspired by his idols, Phillips now plays guitar in his school’s jazz group and dreams of meeting frontman Dave Grohl. Family friend Aimee Parkinson noted the community’s support, adding, “Even if it doesn’t happen, just this hype around it for him is amazing.”
