Rubén Rada, Uruguayan music icon, dies at 83

Uruguayan musician Rubén Rada, a central figure in Rioplatense music and a pioneer of the ‘candombe beat’ genre, died on Wednesday, August 26, at the age of 83. His family confirmed his passing following a month-long hospitalization in Montevideo due to bilateral pneumonia and subsequent complications.

Rada’s career spanned over six decades, during which he became an icon by fusing traditional candombe with rock, jazz, funk, and pop. He was a member of influential groups such as El Kinto, Tótem, and Opa, and enjoyed a prolific solo career. His work earned him international recognition, including a 2011 Latin Grammy for Musical Excellence.

Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi declared official mourning, and tributes were held at the Palacio Legislativo. The musical community across Uruguay and Argentina expressed profound grief, noting his immense impact on the cultural identity of the region. Despite his recent health struggles, Rada remained artistically active, with several projects and performances planned for later in the year.
