Rubén Rocha Moya granted indefinite leave by Sinaloa Congress
The Sinaloa State Congress has unanimously approved a second indefinite leave of absence for Governor Rubén Rocha Moya. This decision follows a brief period where Rocha Moya had returned to his post after a previous 112-day leave.
Rocha Moya faces an indictment from the U.S. Department of Justice, which alleges links between him, several other officials, and the 'Los Chapitos' faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. The Governor has denied all allegations, asserting his innocence.
In the Mexican Congress, opposition legislators from the PAN and PRI have called for the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) to conclude its investigation and for Rocha Moya to be extradited to the United States. Senator Lilly Téllez accused the ruling Morena party and President Claudia Sheinbaum of being aware of a supposed 'narcopacto' and suggested their recent distancing from the Governor is driven by fear of U.S. legal action.
President Sheinbaum addressed the situation by stating that personal interests must not supersede national interests, though she noted she had not spoken directly with the Governor regarding his return or subsequent leave.
