Rubén Zamudio Matías appointed Chief of Mexico's Joint Staff

Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) has appointed Brigadier General Rubén Zamudio Matías as the new Chief of the Joint Staff, succeeding Arturo Coronel Flores. The appointment was formalized in a ceremony led by Secretary Ricardo Trevilla Trejo.

Sedena described the change as part of routine human resources procedures to fulfill the missions of the Army, Air Force, and National Guard. Zamudio Matías previously commanded the Second Military Region in Mexicali, Baja California, and has held leadership roles in Chiapas, Veracruz, and Chihuahua.

Zamudio Matías is noted for his experience in bilateral security cooperation, particularly with the U.S. Northern Command. He was involved in the operation that resulted in the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as ‘El Mencho,’ leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). His appointment comes amid efforts to strengthen security coordination between Mexico and the United States.
