Ruby 4.0 to be released on December 25
Ruby is set to release version 4.0 on December 25, marking the 30th anniversary of the programming language's first public release. While this is a major version bump, developers are not expected to encounter serious breaking changes.
Key technical updates in Ruby 4.0 include the introduction of ZJIT, a new method-based Just-In-Time compiler designed to be more accessible to new contributors. Although ZJIT is faster than interpreted code, YJIT remains the recommended choice for production environments.
The release also introduces Ruby::Box, an experimental feature providing isolated namespaces that allows for loading multiple versions of a library simultaneously. Additionally, the Ractor API has been redesigned to utilize Ractor::Port for communication, replacing the previous Ractor.yield and Ractor#take methods.
