Ruch Narodowy accuses Gniezno officials of Warsaw-level salaries amid city debt

The National Movement (Ruch Narodowy), a component of the Confederation coalition, launched an information campaign in Gniezno, Poland, alleging that the city’s mayor, council members and heads of municipal companies receive salaries comparable to those in Warsaw. The party highlighted the city’s rising debt, now estimated at 182 million zlotys, and recent fee increases for residents on water, sewage, waste collection, public transport and parking. Party representatives, including regional president Maciej Jóźwiak, called the situation a scandal and said they would issue a “red card” to the municipal authorities.

Gniezno’s city office responded, emphasizing that officials’ remuneration is set by law, transparent and linked to the scope of responsibility, budget size and assets managed. Spokeswoman Monika Fifer said the salaries are publicly available and that the municipality has never concealed them. She added that fee hikes are directed to the municipal budget for operational and modernization needs, not to increase officials’ pay. The city urged residents to consider the broader financial context while defending the legality of the compensation arrangements.
