Borneo forest fires: Teenager fights flames in Superman costume

Rudiyansah, a 17-year-old volunteer from Palangkaraya, has gained international attention for fighting forest fires on the island of Borneo while wearing a Superman costume. He assists his father, Mulyadi, in a volunteer firefighting group established in 2020 to combat peatland fires.

The teenager's actions went viral after videos of him using a hose to dampen vegetation amidst charred landscapes reached millions of viewers. Indonesian Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni has officially recognized him as a ‘forest hero’. Rudiyansah, who dreams of becoming a forest ranger, noted that he wears the costume to help motivate others and prefers helping his community over using his smartphone.

The fires, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon and drought, have devastated over 200,000 hectares of land in Indonesia between January and July, an area three times the size of Jakarta. The intense heat and lack of water sources have made firefighting efforts particularly difficult for local volunteers.
