Rudolf Hrušínský: Legacy of a Czech cinema icon

The Czech Republic commemorates the 106th anniversary of the birth of Rudolf Hrušínský, one of the most prominent actors of 20th-century domestic cinema. Born on October 17, 1920, in Nová Včelnice to a family of traveling actors, Hrušínský developed a natural acting style characterized by subtlety and emotional depth.

His career included iconic roles in films such as 'Rozmarné léto', 'Spalovač mrtvol', and 'Vesničko má středisková'. He was a frequent collaborator with director Jiří Menzel and a mainstay at the National Theatre in Prague.

One of his most defining roles was portraying Josef Švejk, a performance that required him to gain 20 kilograms for the role, leading to lifelong struggles with weight. Additionally, his portrayal of the school director in 'Obecná škola'—a role originally intended for Slovak actor Marián Labuda—remains a cinematic classic. The Hrušínský acting legacy continues through his descendants, including his sons Rudolf and Jan, and grandson Kryštof.
