Ruesga residents oppose energy projects to protect karst heritage
Residents of Ruesga have formally requested that the Government of Cantabria deny permits for three major energy projects: two BESS battery storage plants in Fuente las Varas and the Sierra de Sel wind farm.
Local citizens argue these projects threaten the area’s karst heritage and underground ecosystems. They emphasize that the region’s subterranean world holds international importance, attracting speleologists globally, and should receive maximum protection.
Concerns have been raised regarding the BESS Solórzano project, with allegations suggesting that government studies failed to identify potential impacts on the subsoil near the Cuatro Valles cave system. The community is calling for the preservation of the karst landscape and the unique biodiversity it supports.
