Rugao, China, identified as a longevity hub with hundreds of centenarians

Rugao, located in China's Jiangsu Province, has become known as a "capital of longevity" due to its high concentration of elderly residents. As of February 2026, the area recorded 672 individuals aged 100 or older.

Researchers from the Institute of Soil Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences suggest that the region's mineral-rich soil may contribute to this phenomenon. The soil is believed to enhance the nutritional value of local crops by providing beneficial trace elements.

One notable resident, 111-year-old Wang Gaiying, attributes her longevity to maintaining physical activity through daily household chores and light agricultural work, such as harvesting peanuts and watermelons. She also emphasizes a balanced diet, favoring easy-to-digest foods like fish and variety in her meals over large quantities.
