Rugby Australia and players face deadline in pay dispute
Rugby Australia (RA) and the Rugby Union Players’ Association (RUPA) are in tense negotiations to secure a new five-year collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The current agreement is set to expire on Saturday, October 31.
RUPA is seeking significant pay increases for both men’s and women’s players. The union is also advocating for players to receive a portion of the $100 million fee RA will receive for co-hosting next year’s men’s World Cup. RUPA argues that increased investment is necessary to reignite the sport in Australia.
In response, Rugby Australia maintains it has presented a strong offer that includes an increase in minimum player spending and bonuses tied to World Cup success. RA officials have expressed concern regarding the scale of RUPA’s initial demands, stating they have a responsibility to use upcoming windfalls from the Lions tour and the World Cup to ensure the long-term financial stability of the sport.
