Rugby Australia and players' union stall on new agreement

Negotiations between Rugby Australia (RA) and the Rugby Union Players Association (RUPA) have stalled ahead of an October 31 deadline for a new collective bargaining agreement. RUPA Chief Executive Adrian Turner criticized RA for “penny-pinching,” specifically citing the refusal to share financial gains from the 2027 Rugby World Cup with players.

Players are advocating for increased investment across all levels, noting that the Super Rugby salary cap of $5.5 million per club has remained largely unchanged since 2018. RUPA argues that better investment is necessary to prevent top talent from moving to other sports or overseas clubs.

In response, RA Chief Phil Waugh stated the national body must prioritize using windfalls from the Lions and World Cup to secure the long-term future of the sport. While a formal player strike is unlikely due to existing contract obligations, an expired agreement could allow players to boycott commercial engagements and sponsor appearances.
