Rugby Football League CEO Ian Nolan outlines growth strategy

Ian Nolan, the new Chief Executive of the Rugby Football League (RFL), has detailed his ambitions to expand the sport by attracting new audiences rather than increasing financial pressure on existing fans. Nolan stated that the organization aims to “grow the top of the funnel” by bringing in new viewers, noting that while the Grand Final was a sellout, there is significant potential to expand the sport's reach.

Following England’s early exit from the World Cup, the RFL has launched a panel to investigate the sport's international standing. Nolan suggested introducing new competitive series, similar to the Ashes, against nations such as Australia, New Zealand, or France to elevate the international game.

However, pundit Jon Wilkin has challenged the current direction of the Super League. Wilkin argued that the transition to a 14-team competition and an increase in player quotas from seven to ten have “watered down” the product, leading to less competitive matches.
