Rugby Football Union delays community season due to pitch safety

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has announced a delay to the start of the competitive community rugby season until the week commencing September 21. The decision follows consultations with clubs across England and is driven by concerns over pitch safety. Prolonged dry weather has left many grounds too hard for safe full-contact activity.

Under the new guidance, no competitive matches in RFU Men’s leagues at Regional 1 and below, or RFU Women’s Leagues below PWR level, will take place before the new start date. National League 1 and 2 matches may proceed subject to RFU oversight. Age-grade matches scheduled before September 21 have also been postponed.

The Army Rugby Union (ARU) has acknowledged the delay, stating that player welfare and safety are their highest priorities. The ARU is currently reviewing options to maintain rugby activity through the use of all-weather pitch facilities available at Army Garrisons to support training and participation during this period.
