Ruhr region hits record employment level despite three‑year crisis
Despite a three‑year economic crisis, the Ruhr region recorded 878,288 socially insured employees—the highest figure since 1978. The region added 11,374 jobs last year, a growth of 0.6% compared with 2024, outpacing the national increase of 0.1% and the 0.3% rise in North Rhine‑Westphalia.
The surge is driven mainly by the education and knowledge sector, which expanded by 3.9% to over 103,000 jobs, becoming a major employment engine. Earlier, the health sector had already overtaken industry as the region’s largest employer. Meanwhile, major firms such as Thyssenkrupp and Evonik are shedding thousands of jobs, the German auto industry remains weak, and insolvency filings have reached their highest level in two decades.
Jörg Kemna, managing director of Business Metropole Ruhr, said the region’s diversification away from traditional steel, coal and beer industries is now bearing fruit, highlighting the importance of investment in people and re‑skilling.
