Germany faces major rail and road transport disruptions
Germany is facing widespread transportation disruptions due to infrastructure projects and labor strikes.
Deutsche Bahn has announced a major renovation of the Berlin-Lehrte track between Berlin and Hannover. Starting in October, long-distance trains will be diverted via Braunschweig and Magdeburg, adding approximately 80 minutes to travel times. This disruption is expected to last until December 2027 due to delays in electrifying alternative routes.
In Schleswig-Holstein, a two-day warning strike by the Verdi union is affecting public bus services in Kiel, Lübeck, Flensburg, and Neumünster. The strike, aimed at securing a 6.5 percent wage increase, is expected to cause significant disruptions for commuters and students.
Additionally, major highway closures are planned in the Ruhrgebiet. The A40 will face a two-week closure near Bochum for bridge repairs, and the A2 will be closed between Oberhausen and Bottrop for asphalt work. Other localized disruptions include night-time closures on the A4 near Cologne for technical adjustments.
