Rui Jorge criticizes FPF leadership over U-21 departure

Rui Jorge, the former coach of the Portuguese U-21 national team, has criticized the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and its president, Pedro Proença, regarding the manner of his departure. After nearly 15 years in the role, Jorge was succeeded by Luís Freire following the conclusion of his contract.

In interviews, Jorge described the exit process as “dishonest” and lacking “human and professional value.” He expressed disappointment that the FPF leadership did not offer a formal acknowledgment or a clear communication regarding his long-standing service to the national teams. He noted that while he understands the need for change, the lack of respect from the president was unacceptable.

Currently serving as the coach for the Azerbaijan U-20 national team, Jorge stated he is focused on developing young talent in his new role. He emphasized that his goal in Azerbaijan is to foster collective play and evolution rather than immediate championship wins, and he clarified that he has no current ambitions to manage a senior national team.
