Rui Takahashi comes out as gay

Rui Takahashi, a 26-year-old professional volleyball player for Suntory Sunbirds Osaka, has publicly come out as gay. In a statement shared via social media on September 29, Takahashi described a lifelong struggle with his identity, noting that he had previously spent years denying his true self.

Takahashi credited his younger brother, Japanese national team star Ran Takahashi, for helping him reach this point of self-acceptance. The two brothers played on the same team for approximately two years, and Takahashi stated that their deep conversations allowed him to organize his thoughts and finally accept himself.

The announcement comes ahead of the new SV League season. Takahashi expressed hope that his courage might serve as a source of inspiration or comfort for others struggling with their own identities. He emphasized that his commitment to volleyball remains unchanged and that he will continue to strive for personal and professional growth.
