Rumbek violence: Conflicting death tolls reported in South Sudan

Authorities in South Sudan are reporting conflicting death tolls following violent community clashes in Rumbek on Friday, October 9. The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) estimated approximately 40 fatalities, including 10 to 11 members of the organized forces. However, Padhil Maker, the executive director of Rumbek Central County, reported that 46 people were killed and 65 others were wounded.

The violence reportedly began as clashes between factions of the Pakam community in Nyangkot village before escalating into confrontations involving armed youth from the Nyang community.

In response to the instability, the SSPDF has deployed troops and established a buffer zone between the rival groups. Military officials stated that the situation has stabilized, though reinforcements are being mobilized for Rumbek and other insecure areas.
