Rumeli Hisarı restoration delays impact local businesses in Istanbul

Local business owners in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul are protesting the prolonged restoration of Rumeli Hisarı, which has been ongoing for approximately six years under the management of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB).

Business owners report significant economic hardship due to the site being closed to visitors. They claim the construction company has occupied the visitor parking lot for use as an office and dormitory, despite a reported lack of active construction work for the past three years. This has led to a decline in foot traffic and subsequent job losses; some businesses report staff numbers have dropped from 50-60 employees to 25-30.

In addition to economic concerns, merchants have raised issues regarding environmental and sanitation problems, including waste accumulation, unsightly container piles, and poor hygiene from on-site facilities.
