Rumen Radev supports Trump-Putin diesel deal amid EU criticism
A controversial agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply Russian diesel to global markets has caused a rift among European leaders. To facilitate the deal, the United States has eased sanctions on Russian diesel imports until April 2027.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev expressed support for the deal, citing the urgent need to lower high fuel prices in Europe and maintain economic competitiveness. Radev also criticized Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, arguing they exacerbate energy price volatility.
In contrast, many EU leaders have condemned the move. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that the deal weakens the Western alliance's unified stance against Moscow. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas described the arrangement as a “gift” to Vladimir Putin during an escalation of Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.
In the United States, a bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced the “Prohibit Corrupt Russia Oil Deals Act” to block the agreement, seeking to prevent the US from investing in the Russian energy sector and to mandate further sanctions.
