Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage wins historic Diamond League javelin title
Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage became the first athlete from his country to win a Diamond League title after securing victory at the 2026 Diamond League Final in Brussels.
Competing at the King Baudouin Stadium, the 23-year-old recorded a winning throw of 89.04m on his third attempt. The performance allowed him to overtake Poland’s Dawid Wegner, who finished second with a personal best of 87.47m. Former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago took third place with 83.99m, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished fourth with 83.70m.
Pathirage noted that difficult and cold weather conditions prevented him from achieving even greater distances. His victory caps a dominant season in which he held the world lead with a 92.62m throw in Rome and consistently breached the 85m mark. The win solidifies his position at the top of the world rankings.
