Rumiko Takahashi and Junji Ito discuss manga collaboration

Manga legends Rumiko Takahashi and Junji Ito recently met for a conversation produced by VIZ Media, titled ‘VIZ Teatime for Two with Rumiko Takahashi and Junji Ito’. The discussion covered their respective careers, mutual impressions, and the evolution of the manga industry.

During the meeting, the two authors explored the possibility of a potential collaboration. Junji Ito suggested that because Takahashi is versatile and ‘can do anything’, a joint project could focus on the horror genre. Takahashi expressed admiration for Ito’s horror style, noting it possesses a ‘freshness that has changed the world of manga’. While they brainstormed themes for a potential short story, such as a calamity affecting middle-aged men, Takahashi jokingly concluded that they would likely not actually pursue such a collaboration.
