One dead and two seriously injured in bus collision at Tomar hospital

A small municipal bus operated by Transportes Urbanos de Tomar collided with the Hospital of Tomar on 4 August 2026. The driver suffered only minor injuries. Two female passengers were taken to the Hospital of Abrantes with serious injuries, while a third passenger, 64‑year‑old Maria de Fátima Rato Henriques da Costa, died at the scene. She had been starting her first day as a cleaning staff member at the hospital. The municipal mayor, Tiago Carrão, confirmed that the bus is owned by the municipality and currently concessioned, and that an investigation into the cause of the crash has been opened. The two seriously injured women remain hospitalized in stable condition, and psychological support is being offered to the victim’s family and the driver. Damage to the hospital building was limited to a metal fence and a portion of the façade.
