Réunionnais victims' collective seeks further justice from France
A new collective, the "Collectif Justice plus Digne pour les Mineurs Réunionnais Déportés," has issued an open letter to President Emmanuel Macron seeking further justice and truth regarding the forced displacement of minors from Réunion to mainland France between 1962 and 1984.
While the signatories acknowledge the historic progress made by Law No. 2026-555—which establishes a memorial commission, a national day of remembrance on February 18, and a lump-sum allowance—they argue the legislation falls short of complete reparation. The group demands that the term "transplantation" used in the law be replaced with "deportation of Réunionnais minors," arguing that the current terminology "attenuates the violence of the facts" and fails to reflect the organized, state-imposed nature of the separation from families and culture.
The collective, which includes descendants and associations like Génération Brisée, calls for a pluralistic consultation process to ensure all affected parties are represented in the implementation of the law.
