Runner Júlio Barreto dies after finishing São Paulo City Marathon

Júlio Barreto, a 50‑year‑old Danone manager and amateur runner, collapsed with loss of consciousness immediately after crossing the finish line of the 10th SP City Marathon in São Paulo on 26 July. Event medical staff began CPR on site at the Jockey Club, and he was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital where advanced support could not save him. The marathon, which attracted more than 32 000 participants, started at Praça Charles Miller in the Pacaembu district and finished at the Jockey Club in the city’s south zone. Organisers issued a statement expressing deep sorrow, confirming the death, and noting that no further details would be released while the family grieves. The cause of death was not disclosed.

The incident has raised questions about medical preparedness at large road races, though officials reiterated that emergency personnel were present and responded immediately.
