Running and sprinting safety: Experts warn of injury risks

Experts emphasize the importance of proper preparation, strength training, and gradual progression to prevent injuries in runners and sprinters. For sprinters, optimizing force application and limb alternation during standing starts can facilitate a smoother transition to maximum speed. However, attempting intense sprints without adequate physical conditioning can lead to injury.

In street running, the risk of injury is significant due to the ease of starting the activity without professional guidance. A 2025 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine involving 5,205 runners found that 35% experienced running-related injuries, with 72% of those cases classified as overuse injuries. Common issues include knee pain, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, tendonitis, and stress fractures.

Orthopedist Renato Pinto notes that while the popularity of running stems from its accessibility, the body requires time to adapt to repetitive impacts. Rapidly increasing distance, speed, or frequency without adequate rest or muscle strengthening increases the likelihood of injury to the lower limbs, specifically the knees, legs, ankles, and feet.
