Running experts warn beginners of injury risks from rapid training progression

As street running grows in popularity, health experts are warning beginners about common mistakes that lead to physical injury. While the sport is easily accessible, experts emphasize that success requires more than just footwear; it necessitates professional guidance, muscle strengthening, adequate rest, and careful planning.

A 2025 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, which monitored 5,205 runners over 18 months, found that 35% of participants sustained running-related injuries. Notably, 72% of these cases were classified as overuse injuries caused by repetitive strain.

Orthopedist Renato Pinto notes that a primary error is the rush to progress too quickly. Beginners often attempt to increase distance, speed, or frequency before the body has adapted to the repetitive impact. Common resulting issues include knee pain, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, tendonitis, and stress fractures.
