Running popularity grows in Poland as community interest rises
Running is experiencing a significant surge in popularity across Poland, evolving from a niche athletic pursuit into a widespread lifestyle trend. Participation in major events has seen dramatic increases; for instance, the Warsaw Marathon grew from 2,119 participants in 2005 to 9,544 in 2025. Similarly, participation in the 15 most popular half-marathons in Poland rose from 79,005 in 2024 to 97,729 in 2025.
Motivations for this trend include physical fitness, weight management, and mental health benefits, such as stress relief and a way to disconnect from digital distractions. Beyond individual health, there is a growing emphasis on the social aspect of the sport, with the rise of 'run clubs' allowing participants to connect through shared training sessions.
Regarding training optimization, discussions continue over the benefits of running on an empty stomach versus after breakfast. While some suggest running fasted may encourage the body to use fat as a primary energy source, research indicates that peak energy availability typically occurs approximately thirty minutes after consuming a meal.
