Rural China hosts community Xiangqi tournaments to promote culture
Rural areas in China are hosting community-based Xiangqi (Chinese chess) tournaments to promote traditional culture and local engagement.
In Gaoalan County, Lanzhou, the fourth annual ‘Harmonious Village’ Xiangqi Tournament took place in Bincao Village. The event drew over 100 players from Gansu, Tianshui, Baiyin, Dingxi, and Ningxia, with ages ranging from 12 to 76. The competition featured both individual and team events, attracting high-level talent including a national master and several provincial champions. The tournament serves as a cultural brand for the village, celebrating the local heritage of chess masters.
Similarly, in Foshan, Guangdong, the ‘Good Luck Chess Up’ championship was brought directly to grassroots villages by the Foshan Sports Lottery. Held under ancient banyan trees and at stone tables, the event aimed to enrich the spiritual and cultural lives of villagers while supporting rural revitalization efforts. These grassroots competitions provide a platform for amateur players to showcase their skills and foster community cohesion through traditional sports.
