Rural communities in Spain implement local solutions to social and economic challenges

Rural communities in Spain are implementing various strategies to address challenges such as isolation, lack of services, and social loneliness. The Resina (Roots of Resilience) project, led by Universitat Jaume I in collaboration with the University of Cádiz and the Public University of Navarra, is investigating these local responses to see if they can address broader ecological and economic challenges.

The study analyzed 257 practices across pilot territories in the Valencian Community, Navarra, and Andalusia. A significant portion of these initiatives, specifically 87 out of the 257 studied, focus on mitigating the lack of leisure and social life in rural areas.

On an individual level, the trend of moving from urban centers to the countryside is also evident. Some families are relocating to mountainous regions, such as Asturias, seeking greater freedom, tranquility, and a different upbringing for their children away from the pace of large cities.
