Rural Development Administration releases simplified beekeeping terminology guide

The Rural Development Administration (RDA) has released a revised edition of the ‘Standard Beekeeping Terminology Guide in Easy Korean’ to coincide with the 580th Hangeul Day. The initiative aims to replace difficult technical terms, many of which are Japanese-style Hanja or outdated expressions, with intuitive Korean words.

A total of 31 terms have been updated. Key changes include replacing ‘sosang’ with ‘beoltong’ (beehive), ‘somun’ with ‘beoltong-chul-im-mun’ (beehive entrance), and ‘naegum’ with ‘beoltong-salpigi’ (inspecting the beehive). Other updates involve biological and product terms, such as changing ‘hwamil’ to ‘kkotkkul’ (flower nectar) and ‘hwabun’ to ‘kkotgaru’ (pollen).

The revised guide includes definitions and photographs to assist both professional beekeepers and the general public. The RDA plans to distribute the guide to the Korea Beekeeping Association, the Korean Beekeeping Society, and various agricultural technology centers, while also making it available for public download.
