Rural development initiatives in Argentina and Cuba
In Río Negro, Argentina, Gina Peña has developed ‘La Margarita, Ruta de la Lana,’ an educational tourism project designed to connect students with the region's traditional sheep farming. The initiative provides guided tours through the steppe to teach students about local flora, fauna, water scarcity, and the entire wool production process, from shearing to weaving.
In Artemisa, Cuba, Sara Carcache Amarán has launched the ‘Proyecto de Desarrollo Local Alevines Carcache.’ Recently approved by municipal administration, the project focuses on fish farming in a half-hectare lagoon near the La Coronela dam. The initiative aims to utilize livestock waste for fish feed and plans to expand into biogas production and a small-scale fish processing industry, creating local employment opportunities.
