Rural Philippine students face poverty and dangerous commutes
Recent reports highlight the severe hardships faced by students in remote Philippine provinces due to poverty and inadequate infrastructure. In Sultan Kudarat, pupils at Megpanga Sulads Mission School in Kulaman were found using heavily rusted milk cans to carry their rice to school, posing significant health risks. The discovery was made after students requested condiments to accompany their plain rice, revealing the lack of basic resources available to rural learners.
In Zamboanga del Sur, students in Barangay Pisompongan previously faced life-threatening conditions while commuting to Pisompongan Integrated School. For years, children had to wade through unpredictable, neck-deep river currents to reach their classrooms. Following a viral video of the dangerous trek, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed agencies to provide solutions. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), through its KALAHI-CIDSS program, has since moved to implement infrastructure improvements, such as footbridges, to connect the community to essential services and education.
