Buenos Aires rural roads in poor condition, survey finds

A study conducted by the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE) in the southeast of Buenos Aires province and the Salado Basin reveals a critical state of rural road infrastructure. According to the report, 79% of agricultural producers rate these roads as “bad” or “very bad,” and 75% state they are not passable year-round.

The deterioration has significant economic consequences for the sector. Approximately 68% of respondents reported real economic losses due to delays or the inability to transport production. Furthermore, 59% estimated that poor road conditions increase logistics costs by more than 10%, driven by higher freight expenses, vehicle maintenance, and increased fuel consumption of 20-30% on unpaved surfaces.

Key infrastructure issues identified include massive presence of potholes (68%) and road deformations (82%). Additionally, 82% of producers noted that road signage is either non-existent or severely deteriorated, raising safety concerns. The study was carried out with collaboration from Aapresid, Movimiento CREA, and the Sociedad Rural Argentina (SRA).
