Rural school districts see faster recovery in student attendance rates
A study involving 8,586 school districts across 34 states and the District of Columbia indicates that small, rural districts are recovering student attendance rates faster than larger urban and suburban districts. Rural districts with fewer than 1,000 students have returned chronic absenteeism to within 2% of pre-pandemic levels at approximately twice the rate of urban districts with over 50,000 students.
Different states have employed varying strategies to address this issue. California utilized large-scale legislative changes and increased pandemic recovery funding, while Iowa focused on granular technical assistance and data-driven identification of needs. In smaller districts, such as Earlville Community Unit School District 9 in Illinois, educators report that a smaller scale allows for more individualized family outreach and proactive support.
Addressing chronic absenteeism requires tackling several root causes, including poverty, mental health conditions, disabilities, and logistical barriers like transportation shortages. Experts suggest that fostering a sense of belonging, improving school climate, and ensuring consistent services, such as reliable school busing, are essential to re-engaging students.
