Rural Security Directorate receives high-tech drone on 6th anniversary

The National Directorate of Rural Security celebrated its sixth anniversary with the introduction of high-tech aerial equipment to enhance policing in rural areas. During the ceremony, which was attended by Interior Minister Carlos Negro, the Montevideo Unified Command Center delivered a high-performance drone equipped with infrared and thermal imaging technology.

The new drone is intended to improve the surveillance of difficult-to-access areas and facilitate the location of both people and livestock, even at night or in dense vegetation. Minister Negro noted that these technological advancements could significantly reduce the time required for tasks that previously necessitated multi-day patrols on horseback.

Additionally, the Minister reported that livestock theft (abigeato) decreased by more than 20% during the first half of the year following adjustments to police strategies. The Directorate continues to collaborate with the Ministry of Livestock and various environmental and animal welfare agencies to address issues such as livestock loss and predator attacks.
