Rusal‑controlled Aughinish Alumina refinery sends over half of output to Russia, sparking EU sanctions debate

The Aughinish Alumina plant in County Limerick, Ireland, is owned by the Russian conglomerate Rusal, founded by sanctioned oligarch Oleg Deripaska. Export data show that about 52 % of the refinery’s output was shipped to Rusal’s smelting operations in Russia during the first five months of 2026, raising concerns that the alumina could support the Russian military‑industrial complex.

EU officials warn that sanctioning the plant could cut off a key supply for European aluminium producers, while the Irish government says there is no concrete evidence linking the exported alumina directly to Russian weapons. Irish Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke and Prime Minister Micheál Martin stressed the need for more investigation before any punitive measures are taken, as the refinery supplies roughly a third of Europe’s alumina demand.
