Ruse District Court issues suspended sentence in fatal pedestrian accident

The Ruse District Court has issued a suspended sentence to a pensioner found guilty of causing the death of a pedestrian in February 2024. The driver, who had no prior criminal record, was operating a Lancia vehicle when the fatal incident occurred.

The court determined that the driver failed to exercise necessary caution toward vulnerable road users and did not maintain continuous control over the vehicle. Specifically, the driver failed to adjust speed in accordance with atmospheric conditions, visibility, and traffic intensity, resulting in an inability to stop before the pedestrian crossing the road.

The defendant received a two-year prison sentence, the execution of which is suspended for a four-year probationary period. Additionally, the driver's right to operate a motor vehicle has been revoked for two years. The verdict is subject to appeal before the Veliko Tarnovo Court of Appeal.
