Russell Simmons defends Bill Gates' global health philanthropy

Russell Simmons has publicly defended philanthropist Bill Gates against recent criticism, arguing that Gates’ global health investments have saved more Black lives than anyone else in history. Speaking from Bali, the hip-hop mogul highlighted Gates’ contributions to medicine, specifically mentioning the impact of treatments for diseases like AIDS.

Simmons contrasted Gates with Elon Musk, questioning why Musk receives public celebration while Gates faces scrutiny for initiatives Simmons believes are designed to protect people in Africa and address environmental threats. Simmons also defended Gates’ work regarding climate change and food alternatives, such as plant-based meat, against claims that his efforts are sinister.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has paid out approximately $100 billion during its first 25 years. Much of this funding has been directed toward vaccines, malaria prevention, HIV and tuberculosis programs, and polio eradication. While the foundation notes that programs supported through partners like Gavi and the Global Fund have helped save more than 82 million lives, there is no formal historical metric to verify the specific claim that Gates has saved more Black lives than any other individual.
