Russell T Davies reveals details on Billie Piper’s Doctor Who return

Showrunner Russell T Davies has revealed behind-the-scenes details regarding the recent finale of ‘Doctor Who’ and the unexpected return of Billie Piper. In excerpts from his new memoir, ‘The Queerest of Folk: A Life in Television’, Davies explained that the original plan for Ncuti Gatwa’s exit involved an open-ended regeneration. However, the production team decided to change this approach after realizing the visual effect of the regeneration looked too much like the end of the series itself.

To resolve the narrative uncertainty, Davies introduced Billie Piper in the finale. While this created a cliffhanger regarding her character's identity, Davies dismissed concerns that this would pose a difficulty for the show’s incoming production team. He described the mystery as “a piece of piss” to resolve, suggesting the new team could either embrace the appearance or simply explain it away.

Davies also noted that the decision-making process was influenced by the shifting landscape of the BBC’s partnership with Disney+.
