Russell T Davies reveals Doctor Who Disney+ era plans abandoned

Former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has revealed that plans for a third season under the Disney+ era have been abandoned. In his memoir, ‘The Queerest of Folk’, Davies attributed the difficulties to a lack of understanding from Disney+ executives regarding the series' lore and history.

Davies noted that the decision to launch the new phase with 60th-anniversary specials created a barrier for new viewers by relying too heavily on existing references. He confirmed he will not return for a third stint as showrunner, stating the production is currently out for tender.

The BBC is reviewing proposals for the future of the franchise. Reported bidders for the contract include Jed Mercurio’s company, Hat Trick Mercurio, and World Productions, which is reportedly spearheading efforts for ITV Studios.
