Russell T. Davies reveals failed Star Trek and Doctor Who crossover
Former ‘Doctor Who’ showrunner Russell T. Davies has revealed that plans for a major crossover between the ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Doctor Who’ franchises were abandoned due to corporate and business complications.
According to Davies, the project reached an advanced stage of planning, with him and fellow writer Steven Moffat even booking tickets to Los Angeles to meet with the writers of ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’. The intention was to develop more than a single episode, potentially as a separate spin-off rather than a standard season event.
Despite the enthusiasm from the creative teams, the crossover failed to materialize because of complex international streaming rights. At the time of the discussions, Disney+ held the international streaming rights for ‘Doctor Who’, creating business hurdles that prevented the collaboration from moving forward.
