Russell Westbrook retires after 18-season NBA career

Following his retirement from the NBA after 18 seasons, former player Carmelo Anthony has shared insights into Russell Westbrook’s decision to step away from the game. Anthony noted that the choice to retire is deeply personal and that despite external encouragement to continue, players must decide for themselves when the time is right. He highlighted the psychological toll of facing contract uncertainty and the pressure of navigating the end of a career.

Westbrook’s career is marked by significant milestones, most notably his 11-year tenure with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he earned the 2016/17 MVP award. He holds the NBA record for the most career triple-doubles, surpassing Oscar Robertson. His career highlights include a historic 57-point triple-double against the Orlando Magic and leading the Washington Wizards to the playoffs in 2021.
